BSD Router Project 1.994

BSD Router Project (BSDRP) is an embedded free and open-source router distribution based on FreeBSD. The project's latest release is version 1.994 and uses the FreeBSD 15 development branch. "Starting with this version, BSDRP requires at least a 4GB disk. If you installed BSDRP on a 2GB disk, upgrading will not be possible. However, if it was installed on a 4GB or larger disk, you can resize the system partition using the following command: 'system resize-system-slice 3921924'. New features: This is an intermediate release preparing the branch 2 that will use the poudriere-image framework in place of NanoBSD. Based on FreeBSD 15-head 8f6b66a9d3f and ports tree. New packages: dns/dnsmasq (will replace isc-dhcp44 and dhcprelya); Python 3.11 (this one added more than 100M of libs). Removed packages: freevrrpd (carp is now supporting VRRP mode); ucarp (no more conflict once carp enabled in VRRP mode); net/aquantia-atlantic-kmod (does not build on latest head). Deprecated packages (will be removed in next release): isc-dhcp44 (use dnsmasq, kea requires 300MB disk space with its dependencies); dhcprelya (use dnsmasq)."

FreeBSD 14.2

The FreeBSD team have announced the release of FreeBSD 14.2. The new release includes several minor changes, mostly in th erealm of updated hardware drivers, an update to OpenZFS 2.2.6, and a reduction in size to the boot loader. "The BIOS boot loader added back support for gzip and bzip2, but removed support for graphics mode (by default) to address size problems. (The EFI boot loader is unchanged with support for all of those. Sponsored by Netflix.) Lots of improvements to the network stack, including performance improvements and bug fixes for the sctp(4) stack. Descriptors returned by sctp_peeloff(2) now inherit capabilities from the parent socket. (Sponsored by The FreeBSD Foundation.) MidnightBSD 3.2.0

MidnightBSD is a FreeBSD-derived operating system. A critical goal of the project is to create an easy-to-use desktop environment with graphical ports management. The project has published a new update, MidnightBSD 3.2.0, which introduces Ravenports: "Ravenports is available in MidnightBSD for the amd64 architecture. The initial installation process will prompt you to bootstrap Ravenports. This will initialize it in /raven/, and you will be able to install software packages using /raven/sbin/ravensw. By default, /raven/bin, /raven/sbin, and so on are not on the path. You can add them to the path to make running software in your shell easier. Please visit their website to learn more about Ravenports and find quickstart guides. You can choose either mports or Ravenports at installation time or use packages from both systems. Please note that mixing packages may have some complications, although they are installed in a completely different place from mports. There are various benefits to Ravenports, but a few are more updated packages and quite a few unique packages that mports doesn’t provide currently. For example, Ravenports has an updated Firefox package available. You will not see Ravenports presented as an option on an i386 install."

FreeBSD 14.1

"The FreeBSD Release Engineering team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE. This is the second release of the stable/14 branch. Some of the highlights: the C library now has SIMD implementations of string and memory operations on amd64 for improved performance; improvements to the sound subsystem, including device hotplug; initial native cloud-init (configuration drive) support compatible with OpenStack and many hosters; OpenZFS has been upgraded to version 2.2.4; Clang/LLVM have been upgraded to version 18.1.5; OpenSSH has been upgraded to version 9.7p1.
