The Linux Mint project has published a new development release. Linux Mint 20.3 Beta introduces dark theme support for the Hypnotix video streaming application and presents a new document manager called Thingy. "The Hypnotix IPTV player looks better than ever, thanks to Dark Mode support and a new set of flags. A new search function was added so you can easily find TV channels, movies and series. In addition to M3U and local playlists, the IPTV player now also supports the Xtream API. Linux Mint 20.3 introduces a brand new XApp called Thingy. Thingy is a Document Manager. It gives you a quick access to your favorite and recently opened documents and keeps track of your reading progress. The Sticky Notes application now has a search function. The look of the notes was improved by embedding the title within the note. A new control was added inside the notes toolbar to control the size of the text."

The Linux Mint team has announced the availability of a new beta version of Linux Mint Debian Edition, a platform which provides Mint-specific packages and technology while using the Debian distribution as its foundation. "This is the beta release for LMDE 4 'Debbie'. LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Known issues: the root account is locked by default; to add support for shared folders, drag and drop, proper acceleration and display resolution in VirtualBox, click on the 'Devices' menu of VirtualBox and choose 'Insert Guest Additions CD Image'; if you're facing issues with your microphone or your sound output, please install 'pavucontrol'...."

Distribution Release: Linux Mint 2 "LMDE"

Clement Lefebvre has announced the launch of Linux Mint "Debian Edition", version 2. The new release, code named "Betsy", is available in two variants (Cinnamon and MATE) and is based on packages provided by Debian "Jessie". There are separate release announcements for Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 Cinnamon edition and for the MATE edition. Both announcements discuss the features of the new release and how it differs from Linux Mint's other products: "LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is a very exciting distribution, targeted at experienced users, which provides the same environment as Linux Mint but uses Debian as its package base, instead of Ubuntu. LMDE is less mainstream than Linux Mint, it has a much smaller user base, it is not compatible with PPAs, and it lacks a few features. That makes it a bit harder to use and harder to find help for, so it is not recommended for novice users. LMDE is however slightly faster than Linux Mint and it runs newer packages. Life on the LMDE side can be exciting. There are no point releases in LMDE 2, except for bug fixes and security fixes base packages stay the same, but Mint and desktop components are updated continuously."
