"The Scarthgap-series is built with packages compiled in a fork of OpenEmbedded, and optimised for EasyOS, but a small package repository; only about 1800 packages. However, more packages can be installed via Appi, the AppImage manager, and Flapi, the Flatpak manager. There is yet another avenue for adding packages to Scarthgap; another Linux distribution can be run in a container and within that container there is access to the entire package repository of that distribution. Easy Scarthgap can run Easy Daedalus in a container, which means that you don't really need to run Easy Daedalus as a separate distribution."

Alpine Linux 3.21.0

Alpine Linux is a community developed operating system designed for routers, firewalls, VPNs, VoIP boxes, containers, and servers. The project's latest release is Alpine Linux 3.21.0. Along with several key package upgrades, the new version also introduces loongarch64 CPU support. "We are pleased to announce the release of Alpine Linux 3.21.0, the first in the v3.21 stable series. Highlights: Linux kernel 6.12, GCC 14, LLVM 19, Node.js (LTS) 22.11, Rust 1.83, Crystal 1.14, GNOME 47, Go 1.23, KDE Plasma 6.2, LXQt 2.1, PHP 8.4, Qt 6.8, Sway 1.10, .NET 9.0. Significant changes: initial support for loongarch64 was added. As always, make sure to use 'apk upgrade --available' when switching between major versions. OpenSSH service will automatically restart when upgrading to be able to accept new connections. The linux-firmware is now compressed with zstd. Users running custom-built kernels need to ensure that CONFIG_FW_LOADER_COMPRESS_ZSTD=y is present in the kernel configuration. Users with / and /usr on separate filesystems (which is unsupported) need to take special care."

elementary OS 8.0

The elementary OS project has announced the release of version 8.0 of the project's Ubuntu-based distribution. The new release focuses on adjusting application permissions and expanding the default Flatpak repositories: "Application settings has an all-new design that expands your control over permissions. We now support adjusting the run-time permissions in Flatpak's Permissions Store - these are set when an app explicitly asks for your permission to access a feature while it's running. So if you've previously denied an app access to run in the background or granted an app permission to set the wallpaper, you can change your mind at any time and adjust permissions here. We've also adjusted the language of install-time permissions - aka sandbox holes - to be more clear that these represent advanced system access and the implications of adjusting them. Plus the descriptions of several individual items were changed based on your feedback to use less technical language. And app permission pages now show the app's icon and description."

Emmabuntüs DE5-1.03

The Emmabuntüs project is a desktop Linux distribution with editions based on Debian's Stable branch with both the Xfce and LXQt desktop environments available. The project has fixed some issues with the ISO which could cause problems when used with specific image writers. The new Emmabuntüs DE5-1.03 release also improves braille support. The release announcement states: "This new version of our distribution mainly concerns updates of some embedded software, the fix for the use of bootable USB stick creators with the precious help of Thomas, the Xorriso developer, and the addition of the ibus-braille utility enabling 6 dots writing via the keyboard like the Perkins method. Emmabuntüs DE 5 1.03 includes the following new features and enhancements: Based on the Debian 12.8 'Bookworm' operating system; added ibus-braille accessibility function for 6 dots writing via the keyboard like the Perkins method; fix of ISO usage by the bootable USB stick creators Etcher and MintStick, following the evolution of the Syslinux replacement by GRUB-PC; updates: Firefox 128.4.0esr, Thunderbird 128.4.3esr, Warpinator 1.8.6, Cahiers débutant Debian 12.7, deb-get 0.4.3, TurboPrint 2.57."

This new version updates the OpenJDK Java platform to version 17 and the .NET development platform to version 9.0. "Oracle is pleased to announce that Oracle Linux 9 Update 5 for the 64-bit Intel and AMD (x86_64) and 64-bit Arm (aarch64) platforms is now generally available.
