elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features a custom desktop environment called Pantheon. The project's latest release, elementary OS 6 "Odin", features sandboxed applications via Flatpak bundles, a new dark theme, and multi-touch gestures. "elementary OS 6 leverages cutting-edge sandboxing technology to enforce privacy and security protections at a technical level. In OS 6, all AppCenter apps are now packaged and distributed as Flatpaks, a modern container format that keeps apps siloed away from each other and your sensitive data. Several default elementary OS apps are now being distributed as Flatpaks as well. In addition, elementary OS 6 utilizes Portals to keep you in control of how apps interact with each other and your data. Apps must explicitly request permission in a well-defined way e.g. to get access to files or launch other apps. A new Permissions view in System Settings -> Applications exposes all the permissions apps have requested and gives you control to override or revoke them."

Daniel For? has announced the release of elementary OS 0.4.1, the first point update of the project's "Loki" series. The new version is based on Ubuntu 16.04.2: "We're proud to announce the release of a major update to elementary OS Loki - version 0.4.1. This release brings a new hardware enablement stack, all of the updates to Loki thus far, plus a brand new AppCenter. Thanks to the wonderful work of the folks at Canonical and Ubuntu, Loki 0.4.1 ships with a newer kernel and X.Org server as part of the Ubuntu 16.04.2 core. This means Linux 4.8 and better support for 7th generation Intel (Kaby Lake) chipsets, among other hardware compatibility and performance improvements. Notable updates include a significant upgrade to Epiphany, several fixes in Files, a redesigned metadata sidebar for Photos, new Bluetooth settings, a microphone indicator and bluetooth device controls in the sound indicator, a brightness slider in the power indicator, the ability to start an AppCenter search from the applications menu, look & feel updates, better support for CJK input methods, better translations, and more."

After a little over a year of development, elementary is proud to announce the stable release of elementary OS Loki." The new version includes many new features, such as a new software manager called AppCenter. New natural language processing has been added to the calendar application and the distribution now ships with the Epiphany web browser. Desktop notifications have been revamped too for the 0.4 release: "The brand new Notification Center catches notifications from apps and lets you see and act on them later. It also provides a handy system-wide Do Not Disturb toggle. By default, all apps show in the Notification Center, but you can disable noisy apps in the Notifications section of System Settings. The Notification Center is powered by the FreeDesktop notifications specification, so any apps following this open standard will work automatically.
