NomadBSD 141R ZFS

NomadBSD is a live desktop system for USB flash drives, based on FreeBSD. The project has published a new update, NomadBSD 141R, which brings the base system up to date with FreeBSD 14.1. The release announcement shares the highlights: "Changes since 140R-20240126: The base system has been changed to FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE-p2. A hard link creation bug concerning unionfs has been fixed. A calculation bug which led to an overfull UFS root partition has been fixed. The fusefs module has been changed to reduce (and hopefully eliminate) timeout errors on unionfs. The NomadBSD tools have been ported from Qt5 to Qt6. Several small improvements and bugfixes." NomadBSD is available in UFS and ZFS flavours for multiple architectures.

OPNsense is a HardenedBSD-based specialist operating system (and a fork of pfSense) designed for firewalls and routers. The project's latest release, OPNsense 21.7, will be the last version based on HardenedBSD and introduces a new installer with ZFS support. "For more than six and a half years, OPNsense is driving innovation through modularising and hardening the open source firewall, with simple and reliable firmware upgrades, multi-language support, fast adoption of upstream software updates as well as clear and stable 2-Clause BSD licensing. OPNSense 21.7, nicknamed 'Noble Nightingale', is one of the largest iterations of code changes in our recent history. It will also be the last release on HardenedBSD 12.1. We are planning to start the work on FreeBSD 13 as soon as next week for the 22.1 series. The installer was replaced to offer native ZFS installations and prevent glitches in virtual machines using UEFI. Firmware updates were partially redesigned and the UI layout consolidated between static and MVC pages. The live log now contains the actual rule ID to avoid mismatches after adjusting your ruleset and the firewall aliases now also support wildcard netmasks."

The project's latest release updates the operating system to be up to date with FreeBSD 12.1 and fixes the filesystem layout to allow tools like bectl to snapshot the boot environment. " We are pleased to present the release of NomadBSD 1.3.2. Changes since 1.3.1: the base system has been upgraded to FreeBSD 12.1-p6; rtsx-kmod, which is a driver for Realtek card readers, has been added; the ZFS layout used for installing NomadBSD on a hard disk has been changed to allow beactl to back up the boot environment; load_iichid has been added - it is a rc-script which offers the user, via a dialog(1) menu, to load the experimental iichid driver from sysutils/iichid if it finds a I2C HID; graphics/intel-backlight has been added; a curses menu has been added - it allows user to acknowledge licenses of certain wireless drivers in order to use them; a unionfs_maxfiles rc.conf variable has been added - it controls how many files can be opened on the Unionfs file system; graphics/mirage has been replaced by graphics/viewnior; a patch from 12-STABLE has been added to the acpi_video module - i sends devd events whenever the brightness is changed...."
