The GhostBSD team have announced a new release, GhostBSD 18.10, which is the first stable version from the project to use TrueOS instead of FreeBSD as the operating system's base. The new version also adopts LibreSSL over OpenSSL, removes the GRUB boot loader in favour of FreeBSD's loader and the operating system uses ZFS as the default file system. "GhostBSD 18.10 is our first official release of GhostBSD with TrueOS under the hood and the official desktop is MATE. What has changed since 11.1: GhostBSD is now built from TrueOS instead of FreeBSD; OpenRC is GhostBSD main init system; LibreSSL is the default SSL; GhostBSD base system can now be upgraded to the next release via TrueOS packages base; we removed GRUB from the ISO in favor of the new FreeBSD hybrid loader; NetworkMgr now supports the option to manage multiple network card connection; Unionfs was removed from the live session; the live system has been rewritten to fix many issues; GhostBSD boots directly to MATE session; GhostBSD supports ZFS BE by default; FreeBSD ports and packages are incompatible with GhostBSD 18.10; GhostBSD uses TrueOS ports to build packages; drm-next-kmod was added for newer AMD and Intel cards; NVIDIA driver 390.87 was added to support the latest NVIDIA cards...."

"I'm happy to announce the availability of MidnightBSD 1.0 for amd64 and i386. Over the years, many ambitious goals were set for our 1.0 release. As it approached, it was clear we wouldn't be able to accomplish all of them. This release is more of a natural progression rather than a groundbreaking event. It includes many updates to the base system, improvements to the package manager, an updated compiler and tools. Of particular note, you can now boot off of ZFS and use NVME SSDs and some AMD Radeon graphics cards support acceleration. AMD Ryzen support has greatly improved in this release. We also have added bhyve from FreeBSD. The single largest removal of functionality was the sensors framework. We found that there were some locking issues that couldn't easily be addressed without some major work. Sudo was removed from the base system and replaced with doas(1) from OpenBSD."

Noteworthy changes since 10.4-BETA4: an upstream fix for zlib compression has been merged, the bug had caused the embedded Tomcat web server of UniFi Controllers to send out incorrectly compressed responses; the Linux statfs ftype is now aware of ZFS; abug in bsdinstall(8) causing ifconfig_$INTERFACE lines to be added to /etc/rc.conf for unsuccessful DHCP attempts has been addressed; the usermod command of the pw(8) utility now correctly handles empty secondary group lists and its useradd command will no longer add entries with invalid user names, e. g. ones containing spaces; the zfs(8) error message displayed when rejecting a checksum selection now no longer suggests unsupported hash algorithms itself."
