Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution that includes a collection of security and forensics tools. The Kali developers have released a new version, Kali Linux 2018.1, which features an updated kernel and two new security features: "Kali Linux 2018.1 has a shiny new 4.14.12 kernel. New kernels always have a lot of new features and the 4.14 kernel is no exception, although two new features really stand out. AMD Secure Memory Encryption Support - Secure Memory Encryption is a feature that will be in newer AMD processors that enables automatic encryption and decryption of DRAM. The addition of this features means that systems will no longer (in theory) be vulnerable to cold-boot attacks because, even with physical access, the memory will be not be readable. Increased Memory Limits - Current (and older) 64-bit processors have a limit of 64 TB of physical address space and 256 TB of virtual address space (VAS), which was sufficient for more than a decade but with some server hardware shipping with 64 TB of memory, the limits have been reached. Fortunately, upcoming processors will enable 5-level paging, support for which is included in the 4.14 kernel."

Jerry Bezencon has announced the release of Linux Lite 3.8, an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring the lightweight Xfce desktop. "Linux Lite 3.8 Final is now available for download. There have been a number of changes since the 3.6 release. This is the last release for Series 3.x. Linux Lite 4.0 Final will be released on June 1st, 2018. The changes for Linux Lite 3.8 include: more support for LibreOffice; regional support for DVDs; a font viewer and Installer; we now have our own Google-based search page as the home page in Firefox. We've also added TLP for Laptops to Lite Tweaks. We've added a Thesaurus (synonyms) to LibreOffice for the US English language. If you have DVDs that are from a region other than your own, you can now easily change the region so that the DVD will play in VLC. Insert your DVD, open a terminal and type 'regionset', then follow the on-screen instructions."

Parrot Security OS is a Debian-based, security-oriented distribution featuring a collection of utilities designed for penetration testing and computer forensics. The project's latest release, Parrot Security OS 3.11, includes fixes for Metasploit and PostgreSQL as well as a new automobile hacking menu which includes tools for testing real world cars. "This new release introduces many improvements and security fixes compared to the previous versions. It includes by default all the Spectre/Meltdown security patches currently available and an updated version of the Linux 4.14 kernel. A new car hacking menu now contains a collection of useful open source tools in the automotive industry to test real world cars or simulate CANBus networks. Metasploit and PostgreSQL are now patched to work flawlessly out of the box in live mode. Other important updates include Firefox 58, increased installer stability, many updated security tools and some important graphic improvements.
