MX Linux 23.2

The MX Linux project, a Debian-based, desktop distribution has published a new update to the distribution's 23.x series. MX Linux 23.2 is based on Debian 12 "Bookworm" and includes a number of fixes and improvements. "Some highlights include: installer updates addressing fstab generation, gui simplification, and fixes for users of “toram” live feature. New tool “MX Locale”, for management of system locale information, system default language, etc. New tool 'papirus-folder-colors', which is a fun little tool for making papirus-family themes with different folder colours. AHS Xfce release features the 6.6 liquorix kernel, updated firmware and mesa libraries. An opt-in option for auto-updates is in MX-Packageinstaller -> Popular Apps -> Kernels. The KDE Plasma ISO replaces webcamoid with kamoso. the Xfce and fluxbox isos replace webamoid with guvcview. Fixes to the mx-comfort-themes for some apps that had white text on white backgrounds and black text on blackgrounds. 'build-essential' packages now included on ISO, for those users that might need to compile some driver and not be able to get on-line. Pipewire 1.0."

Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon

The Linux Mint team have published a new version of their Ubuntu-based distribution: Linux Mint 21.3. The new point release includes several new features, including a new type of Cinnamon add-on (or "spice") which adds actions to the file manager. This release also includes support for Secure Boot and introduces experimental support for Wayland sessions in Cinnamon. "Cinnamon add-ons are called 'spices'. Until now Cinnamon supported 4 types of spices: Applets: Little programs which can be placed in your panel(s); Desklets: Same thing, but on your desktop; Extensions: Scripts which can alter the way Cinnamon works; Themes: Look and feel for your Cinnamon desktop. Cinnamon 6.0 features a new type of spices: Actions. Actions, formerly known as 'Nemo actions', are add-ons for your file manager's context menu. Right-click an .iso file and look at the context menu. The 'Make bootable USB stick' and 'Verify' menu items are Nemo actions, provided by the mintstick package. In Cinnamon 6.0, actions are now a type of spice. You can download, enable and rate them like any other spices: applets, desklets, extensions and Cinnamon themes."

NetBSD 10.0 RC2

NetBSD is a highly portable operating system which offers a minimal and clean design. The project has published its second (and probably final) release candidate for NetBSD 10.0. Among the enhancements in this snapshot are cyptographic updates and an experimental implementation of WireGuard. "Compatibility with WireGuard: A new interface, wg(4), provides a VPN tunnel compatible with the WireGuard specification. The driver is experimental and needs more testing. A userspace implementation using a rump kernel server is also included, see wg-userspace(4)/ The NetBSD implementation works with WireGuard implementations used by commercial VPN providers, Android, Linux, and more. Stronger, faster cryptography: Added an implementation of the Adiantum cipher for efficient disk encryption with cgd(4) on systems without AES acceleration. Added support for shared keys to cgdconfig(8), allowing multiple derived subkeys to be used across multiple drives. Switched the default password hashing algorithm to Argon2id, winner of the Password Hashing Competition. The algorithm's hardness automatically scales with system performance. Added support for Argon2id to cgdconfig(8) for use in password-based disk encryption. The kernel now takes advantage of CPU acceleration and vectorization for common cryptographic algorithms on x86 and Arm, including AES and ChaCha. All in-kernel implementations of AES are now constant-time on all architectures. Swap encryption is now automatic using the vm.swap_encrypt=1 sysctl(8) variable."

wattOS R13

wattOS is a fast desktop Linux distribution based on Debian. Using the lightweight Openbox window manager as its default user interface, the distribution strives to be as energy-efficient as possible.
