Rhino Linux 2024.2

Rhino Linux is an Ubuntu-based distribution which offers a rolling-release upgrade approach. Rhino features a custom meta package manager which unifies Deb, Pacstall and Flatpak software management. The project's latest release, Rhino Linux 2024.2, includes a new theme and an overhauled configuration wizard. "Our Setup Wizard has just gotten a whole lot better, and we offer something for both regular and power users. We have added a signifcant number of containerization options, a new package manager, and even the option to add night shift. You can now select these additional options in the rhino-setup wizard: Nix, the package manager (note: rhino-pkg/rpk does not currently support Nix). Docker, for rapid containerization and development. Podman, a daemon-less, drop-in replacement for Docker. Flatseal, a GUI application for managing permissions on installed Flatpaks. Distrobox, a program that uses Docker or Podman to deploy containers for other distributions on top of Rhino. Apptainer, for developing smaller application containers. VirtualBox, a GUI virtual machine application. QEMU, a free and open source emulation backbone. Redshift, adjust the color temperature of your screen according to your surroundings."

CachyOS August 2024 Release

This is our 9th release this year, featuring improvements in hardware detection and infrastructure enhancements.

Starting with this release, the hardware detection will automatically use the open NVIDIA modules. Users can revert to closed-source modules by running sudo pacman -S linux-cachyos-nvidia.

We’ve also included the latest NVIDIA Beta driver (560) after extensive testing. This driver appears to be in a stable state following its second beta release.

The Cosmic Desktop Environment is now available for installation. We’ll follow the upstream release (Alpha 1) for packaging. Packages based on the latest commit are available, though these won’t be used for installation. Existing users can install Cosmic on their current setup with the command: sudo pacman -S cosmic-session. This installs the base packages for running Cosmic. Additional packages like cosmic-text-editor, cosmic-terminal, and cosmic-store are also available.

Tails 6.6

The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity. The project's latest release, Tails 6.6, is focused on fixing issues and improving the persistent storage experience. "Fixed problems: Persistent storage: Increase the maximum waiting time to 4 minutes when unlocking the Persistent Storage before returning an error. Made the creation of the Persistent Storage more robust after starting a Tails USB stick for the first time. Prevent the Persistent Storage settings from freezing after opening a link to the documentation. Prevent Additional Software from crashing when installing virtual packages. Networking: Fix connecting to the Tor network using default bridges. Allow enabling multiple network interfaces again."

IPFire 2.29 Core 187

IPFire is a Linux-based operating system for firewalls. The project focuses on easy set-up and configuration. The project's latest release introduces an extra layer of protection against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. "Since IPFire is very commonly deployed in data centres where denial-of-service attacks happen on a regular basis, we now have added better protection against those kinds of attacks. Formerly, the system protected itself rather well against (D)DoS attacks, but this was only limited if TCP connections terminated at the firewall itself like for reverse proxies, etc. Now, IPFire can use TCP SYN cookies to protect infrastructure behind it better against SYN flood attacks. This is especially useful in high-bandwidth scenarios and cloud deployments and can be activated with only one checkbox separately for each firewall rule."

Vanilla OS 2

The Vanilla OS team have annoiced the second release of their distribution, which carries the codename Orchid. Vanilla OS 2 drops the Ubuntu base in favour of Debian and strives to provide a stable environment which can run packages in a variety of formates while also offering the ability to rollback changes. "Did you encounter a system issue and need to revert to a previous stable state? With Orchid, this is quite simple, if something goes wrong, you can select the previous state during boot. After logging in, Orchid will prompt you to perform a rollback, once confirmed, this rollback becomes permanent until the next update. When a new update happens, the problematic state will be replaced with the new version of the operating system. Why would you need to perform a rollback? Even though Orchid is designed to be stable and compatible, and its update system ensures the updates are only installed if they pass, and despite every update being meticulously tested by our developers, something can still go wrong. Having a recovery point is essential. For example, you might be using hardware that is not compatible with the update, which is a scenario we cannot fully cover (yet)."
