Rocky Linux is a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, built from the upstream project's source code. The Rocky Linux team have launched version 8.5 of their operating system. One of the major changes in this release is the debut support for Secure Boot. "In less then 48 hours from RHEL-8.5 being released, we had successful tests on our ISOs and just before we were about to pull the string to go GA with 8.5, Microsoft countersigned our Secure Boot shim. We quickly deliberated and decided to backtrack and incorporate that into the 8.5 release. There were some things that we had to get in order and resolved, but it is with great pleasure that this release includes the official Rocky Linux signed shim. As with any security related diligence, it is important to be able to validate the Secure Boot shim is exactly what you expect and that it is properly activated."

The new version is labelled as CentOS 8.4.2105 and is derived from RHEL 8.4: "We are pleased to announce the general availability of the latest version of CentOS Linux 8. Effectively immediately, this is the current release for CentOS Linux 8 and is tagged as 2105, derived from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 source code. Updates released since the upstream release are all posted, across all architectures. We strongly recommend every user apply all updates, including the content released today, on your existing CentOS Linux 8 machine by just running 'dnf update'. Of particular note, this release adds the following new versions of software in optional module streams: Python 3.9, SWIG 4.0, Subversion 1.14, Redis 6, PostgreSQL 13, MariaDB 10.5. Several rolling AppStream have been rebased to newer versions: LLVM Toolset 11.0.0, Rust Toolset 1.49.0, Go Toolset 1.15.7."

VzLinux is the latest of the growing numbers of Red Hat Enterprise Linux clones and another potential alternative for those thinking to migrate away from the abandoned CentOS 8 distribution. It is a completely free and open-source product developed by Swiss-based Virtuozzo International GmbH and it compliments its range of specialist commercial solutions based on VzLinux. AlmaLinux OS is an open-source, community-driven project that is built from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). AlmaLinux OS introduces support for Secure Boot.
