pfSense is a free, open source customized distribution of FreeBSD specifically tailored for use as a firewall and router that is entirely managed via web interface. The project's latest release, pfSense 2.5.0, is based on FreeBSD 12.2. The release announcement highlights changes in the new version: "Base OS upgraded to FreeBSD 12.2-STABLE, OpenSSL upgraded to 1.1.1, pPerformance improvements. Kernel WireGuard implementation, as mentioned in a previous WireGuard blog post. WireGuard is a new VPN Layer 3 protocol designed for speed and simplicity. The pfSense documentation site includes information on how to configure WireGuard as well as example configuration recipes. IPsec enhancements: Configuration for the strongSwan IPsec backend was changed from the deprecated ipsec.conf/stroke format to the new swanctl/VICI format. Various improvements to tunnel configuration, including better options for lifetime and rekey to avoid duplicate security associations."

Finnix is a self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution for system administrators, based on Debian. The project tries to remain lightweight and provides a command line interface only. The distribution's latest release is Finnix 122 which reduces ISO image size, improves boot times, and adds a number of new packages. "Today marks the release of Finnix 122, the LiveCD for system administrators. Expanding on Finnix 121 from six months ago, this release includes a number of fixes, new packages and new features. From the Finnix 122 release notes: improved USB flash drive boot compatibility on older BIOSes; improved boot speed; lowered ISO image size; added Finnix getting started command; added WiFi-connect helper script; manpage cache is now being generated, allowing for man -k/apropos; redesigned boot splash screen; increased boot splash timeout from 15 seconds to 30 seconds; added packages - iozone3 (finnix/finnix#8), rover, iw, crda, wireless-regdb, mscompress, apg, ftp, ftp-ssl, keyutils."

The Ubuntu team has announced a new update to the distribution's install media and community editions. The new version is 20.04.2 and it includes bug fixes that have become available since 20.04 was launched along with support for additional hardware. The release announcement states: "The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (Long-Term Support) for its Desktop, Server, and Cloud products, as well as other flavours of Ubuntu with long-term support. Like previous LTS series, 20.04.2 includes hardware enablement stacks for use on newer hardware. This support is offered on all architectures. Ubuntu Server defaults to installing the GA kernel; however you may select the HWE kernel from the installer bootloader. As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS."
