4MLinux 47.0

4MLinux is a minimal distribution which ships tools for four types of tasks: servers, gaming, multimedia and system rescue. The project's latest stable version is 47.0 which comes with upgraded applications for the Internet, including Firefox 133.0, Chrome 131.0 and Thunderbird 128.5, besides various other improvements: "The status of the 4MLinux 47.0 series has been changed to STABLE. As always, the new major release has some new features. GNOME CD Master (GUI frontend for cdrdao), Dia (program for drawing diagrams), GLiv (OpenGL image viewer), XRoar (Dragon and Tandy 8-bit computer emulator) as well as many command line MOD/MIDI players are now available out of the box. Gnubik (famous puzzle game) and GNU Backgammon have been added to the 4MLinux GamePack package (downloadable extension). Support for hundreds of old image formats is now provided by RECOIL (Retro Computer Image Library with its GIMP plugin). And finally, it is now possible to install 4MLinux on virtual KVM block devices (/dev/vda1, /dev/vda2, and so on)."

4MLinux is a small Linux distribution with four areas of focus: system maintenance, multimedia, server, and games. The project's latest release is version 46.0 which no longer features a stand-alone Server edition. "As always, the new major release has some new features. The 4MLinux Server is now available out of the box (meaning that there is no separate 4MServer for download). Support for Windows Enhanced Metafiles (EMF images) as well as raw files from digital cameras (CRW/CR2, NEF, RAF, DNG images) has been added. Support for old audio formats (originating from Amiga, Commodore and the like) has been greatly improved. New applications: DVDAuthor (set of DVD authoring tools), qv4l2 (Qt-based application for testing V4L devices), VCDImager (set of VCD/SVCD authoring tools). Classic GNU Go game has been added to the 4MLinux GamePack package (downloadable extension). And finally, this is the first release that includes GTK version 4."

4MLinux is a small, indepedent distribution which focuses on four areas: network services, games, multimedia, and system rescue. The project's latest release, version 45.0, offers video scaling, new games, and upgrades the OpenSSL version to OpenSSL 3 from 1.1. "As always, the new major release has some new features. Lots of new printing drivers have been added. FFmpeg in 4MLinux now offers improved support for video scaling (resizing) via zimg library. Additionally, FFmpeg and MPlayer make us of Bauer stereophonic-to-binaural DSP effect library (libbs2b) for better handling of stereo audio. Classic CHAMP Kong game has been added to the 4MLinux DOSBox package. Basilisk web browser is now available a downloadable extension. And finally, OpenSSL in 4MLinux has been system-wide upgraded to its version 3."

The new release adds a few new media and game packages and provides additional web browsers as optional add-ons. The release announcement lists the key changes: "The status of the 4MLinux 43.0 series has been changed to STABLE. Edit your documents with LibreOffice 7.5.5 and GNOME Office (AbiWord 3.0.5, GIMP 2.10.34, Gnumeric 1.12.55), surf the Internet with Firefox 115.0.2 and Chrome 115.0.5790.110, send emails via Thunderbird 115.0.1, enjoy your music collection with Audacious 4.3.1, watch your favorite videos with VLC 3.0.18 and SMPlayer 23.6.0, play games powered by Mesa 23.1.1 and Wine 8.12. You can also setup the 4MLinux LAMP Server (Linux 6.1.33, Apache 2.4.57, MariaDB 10.6.14, PHP 5.6.40, PHP 7.4.33, and PHP 8.1.19.). Perl 5.36.0, Python 2.7.18, Python 3.11.3, and Ruby 3.1.4 are also available. As always, the new major release has some new features. SoundFonts (for FluidSynth) and mtPaint (raster graphics editor) have been added. A few Java-based games (Flappy Bird, Karoshi, Micropolis, and Zuma) as well as a set proprietary web browsers (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera) are now available as downloadable extensions."
