Fedora 39

The Fedora project has published a new release, Fedora 39, which includes GNOME 45, an updated version of Inkscape, and updated development tools. This release is also offered in a new atomic desktop flavour which uses the Budgie desktop and is called Fedora Onyx. "On November 6, 2003, the Fedora Project released the Fedora Core 1. One day and twenty years later, we're pleased to bring you Fedora Linux 39, our complete, community-built operating system for desktops, laptops, servers, the cloud, edge devices - and just about anything else you can think of. Fedora Workstation now features GNOME 45, which brings better performance and many usability enhancements, including a new workspace switcher and a much-improved image viewer. If you're looking for a different desktop experience, our Budgie Special Interest Group has created Fedora Onyx, a Budgie-based 'Atomic' desktop in the spirit of Fedora Silverblue. Of course, that's not all - we also have updated desktop flavors featuring KDE Plasma Desktop, Xfce, Cinnamon and more."

openSUSE 15.5

The openSUSE team has announced the release of openSUSE 15.5 Leap, a minor update to the project's 15.x series. The new version mostly offers small updates and security fixes for the 15.x branch of the distribution. "This release brings newer packages like Mesa and others, but Leap 15.5 is a non-feature release. Some of these newer packages to highlight include KDE Plasma 5.27, which is a Plasma Long Term Support version until the next one rolls out in 2024. Konqi lovers will enjoy a new welcome wizard, dynamic customization of desktop workspaces and more functionality with KRunner that includes a full desktop search, unit and currency exchange rate conversions, dictionary definitions, calculator features, and it shows graphical representations of mathematical functions. The Color Picker had a few improvements and added the possibility of displaying another preview color circle. KDE Gear 22.12.3 will be a new package in the release and complement the use of Plasma 5.27. The update fixes bugs with the Desktop Environment applications and highlights the enhancement of compression/decompression utility ark, improvements to text editor Kate and fixes some crashing of the video editor Kdenlive. Qt 5.15 LTS is available with the KDE Qt 5 patch collection."

wattOS R13

wattOS is a fast desktop Linux distribution based on Debian. Using the lightweight Openbox window manager as its default user interface, the distribution strives to be as energy-efficient as possible. The project's latest release, version R13, is based on Debian 12. The project's release announcement lists the details: "wattOS R13 has been released with Debian 12 Bookworm as the basis for the OS. Giving you a stable and reliable foundation. Based on Debian 12 Bookworm - Stable release. LXDE as a lightweight desktop. Kernel 6.1 for 64bit PC installation. Much better hardware support out of the box. Calamares as the installer for a simple streamined install from a live session. Inclusion of gdebi ease install of .deb packages. Additional configuration to enhance the out of the box experience. Minimal in nature so you can install and build as you like."

Nobara Project 39

Nobara Project is a modified version of Fedora Linux with user-friendly fixes added to it. The distribution comes with certain features that do not ship with the regular Fedora. The project's latest release is version 39 which streamlines a few features: "We've removed the codec installer and instead integrated it as part of the 'Update System' app. The goal here was to streamline package updates into one place and give less popups for the user on clean installation. Now, when a user performs a new installation they will receive one pop-up informing them they should update the system. Upon updating they will then be asked a few questions, including updating media codec packages, updating Flatpaks, and updating snaps. There is still a popup for NVIDIA drivers if the user decides to change GPUs and/or did not install using an NVIDIA ISO image and has an NVIDIA GPU. The layout picker has been removed as it was based around GNOME, and we are no longer focusing on GNOME as our primary desktop."
