MX Linux 23.1

The MX Linux development team has announced the release of MX Linux 23.1, an updated build of the project's Debian-based distribution with the SysV init system and a choice of Xfce, KDE Plasma and Fluxbox desktops: "We are pleased to offer MX Linux 23.1 for your use. MX 23.1 is the first refresh of our MX 23 release, consisting of bug fixes, kernel and application updates since our original release of MX 23. If you are already running MX 23, there is no need to reinstall. Packages are all available through the regular update channel. Highlights include: Debian 12.2 'Bookworm' base; new and updated applications. Some highlights include: installer updates addressing swap file, hibernation and OEM install improvements; the KDE release features an updated sddm init script that eliminates the 'restart' of sddm on SySVInit boot; the AHS Xfce release features the 6.5 kernel, updated firmware and MESA libraries; Fluxbox has a new key binding reference script displaying default hotkeys."

Kubuntu 23.10

Kubuntu is the last of the Ubuntu family of Linux distribution that announced the release of version 23.10. The product ships with KDE Plasma 5.27, KDE Frameworks 5.110 and KDE Gear 23.08: "The Kubuntu team is happy to announce that Kubuntu 23.10 has been released, featuring the beautiful KDE Plasma 5.27, simple by default, powerful when needed. FreeBSD 14.0-RC1

"The first RC build of the 14.0-RELEASE release cycle is now available. A summary of changes since 14.0-BETA5 includes: a race condition in swap_pager_swapoff_object() had been fixed; various updates to the Linux KPI, 802.11, iwlwifi, and rtw88; other miscellaneous fixes." Some of the userland configuration changes in FreeBSD 14.0 include: "The default shell for the root user is now sh(1), which now has many features for interactive use; the default mail transport agent is now the Dragonfly Mail Agent (dma(8)), replacing sendmail(8); the mta_start_script configuration variable has been retired in rc.conf(5), along with the othermta startup script; the one-time password facility OPIE, opie(4), has been removed from the base system."

Ubuntu Studio 23.10

Ubuntu Studio is a multimedia-focused community edition of Ubuntu. The project's 23.10 release places a focus on improving PipeWire support and audio configuration. "PipeWire has gained numerous improvements, including fixes for prosumer and professional audio. The JACK compatibility now performs in real-time, and some FireWire features have now been implemented. We also include a new utility, called the Ubuntu Studio Audio Configuration utility, found in the Ubuntu Studio Information menu. This can be used to configure the default PipeWire Quantum value, Enable or Disable the PipeWire-JACK compatibility layer (handy for using JACK by itself), or switch to the classic PulseAudio-JACK setup that was the default prior to 23.04. QPrompt is a Qt-based teleprompter application now available in the repositories. While a snap version does exist and is installable from Discover, the version in the repositories is more up-to-date. Since Discover does not see the version in the repositories, it needs to be installed from the command line by issuing the following command: 'sudo apt install qprompt'"

Xubuntu 23.10

The Xubuntu team have released Xubuntu 23.10 which ships with the Xfce 4.18 desktop. The release announcement shares highlights of the new version: "Highlights: Improved hardware support for Bluetooth headphones and touchpads. Color emoji is now included and supported in Firefox, Thunderbird, and newer GTK-based apps. Significantly improved screensaver integration and stability. Known issues: The shutdown prompt may not be displayed at the end of the installation. Instead you might just see a Xubuntu logo, a black screen with an underscore in the upper left hand corner, or just a black screen. Press Enter and the system will reboot into the installed environment. Xorg crashes and the user is logged out after logging in or switching users on some virtual machines, including GNOME Boxes. You may experience choppy audio or poor system performance while playing audio, but only in some virtual machines (observed in VMware and VirtualBox)."
