Emmabuntüs DE6 RC1

Emmabuntüs is a lightweight, Debian-based distribution. The project has published a development snapshot which is based on Debian's upcoming version 13 "Trixie" launch. The release announcement shares the following details: "This new version of our distribution mainly concerns updates of its embedded software following the release of Debian 13 RC 1, as well as the update of the excellent Debian beginner's handbook for Trixie which now includes a German version, this language being also supported by our distribution. You will also find in this release the Debian standard reference manuals supporting the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese. For this RC 1 version, the following fixes and improvements have been made: based on the Debian 13 RC 1; removed AbiWord and Gnumeric; implemented the new Debian source management format deb822; added Debian Beginners Handbook 13; improved Italian translation. Updates: Firefox 128.11.0esr, Thunderbird 128.11.0esr, Ventoy 1.1.05, CTparental 5.1.23, gSpeech 0.13, deb-get 0.4.5. Accessibility feature updates: Ocrizer 1.4, Elograf 0.6.0."

Rocky Linux 9.6

Rocky Linux 9.6 has been released. Rocky Linux is a community-driven enterprise Linux distribution and a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. With this release, the project continues to focus on improving its KIWI image-building utility: "We are pleased to announce the general availability of Rocky Linux 9.6. Notable new features and changes: PHP 8.3 and 8.4, nginx 1.26, MySQL 8.4, Valgrind 3.24.0, SystemTap 5.2, elfutils 0.192, libabigail 2.6, Performance Co-pilot 6.3.2, Grafana 10.2.6, LLVM toolset 19.17, Rust toolset 1.84.1, Go toolset 1.23. With the release of Rocky Linux 9.6, the process of building and delivering our images continues to improve. KIWI, a modern image-building tool that allows for a more consistent and maintainable workflow, created most of the images for this release. A new image type is available in this release, Windows Subsystem for Linux (or WSL), compatible container archives can be downloaded and run on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system with ease. Utilities for Oracle Cloud images have been updated to the most recent versions."

AlmaLinux OS 9.6

The AlmaLinux project has released an update to the distribution's 9.x series. AlmaLinux OS 9.6 focuses on performance and security, as the release announcement highlights: "AlmaLinux 9.6 Stable continues to enhance performance, development tools, and security. Updated module streams improve support for web applications, while new compiler versions bring optimizations for better performance. The release also delivers updates to elfutils, Valgrind, SystemTap, and PCP improving system debugging and performance monitoring. Networking improvements come with new versions of NetworkManager and iproute. Security updates include new SELinux-policy and SSSD versions. Containerization and virtualization are improved with updated podman, buildah, libvirt, and QEMU-KVM. Additionally, the new snpguest and snphost packages enhance virtualization capabilities. AlmaLinux OS 9.6 also includes a tech-preview of KVM virtualization support for the IBM Power architecture. It has been unavailable upstream since version 9.0, but is fundamental for a number of AlmaLinux users."

The Kubuntu project has announced the release of Kubuntu 25.04 which features version 6.3 of the Plasma desktop. The release announcement shares the highlights: "The Kubuntu team is happy to announce that Kubuntu 25.04 has been released. Code-named 'Plucky Puffin', Kubuntu 25.04 continues our tradition of giving you Friendly Computing by integrating the latest and greatest open-source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution. The release features the latest KDE Plasma 6.3 desktop, KDE Gear 24.12.3, Linux kernel 6.14 and many other updated applications and libraries. Applications for core day-to-day usage are included and updated, such as Firefox and LibreOffice. In addition to the applications on our install media, 25.04 benefits from the huge number of applications in the Ubuntu archive, plus those installable via snap or other methods. Plasma Wayland session is the default option in sddm (display manager login screen). An X11 session can be selected instead if desired. The last-used session type will be remembered, so you do not have to switch type on each login. Please refer to our release notes for further details."
