PorteuX 1.9 Cinnamon
PorteuX is a Linux distribution based on
Slackware Linux, inspired by Slax and Porteus.
The project's latest snapshot is PorteuX 1.9
which fixes a number of issues, adds CUPS
supports to GTK3, and updates the kernel to
version 6.13.1. The release announcement offers
the details: "Fixed x265 encoding not working;
fixed procps applications not displaying their
own versions; fixed minor Xfce 4.20 issues that
haven't been released upstream; improved support
to some network devices; improved
0050-multilib-lite stripping; improved GCC build
flags to include additional optimizations; added
GPT compatibility to the Linux installer; added
Docker support; added CUPS support to GTK+ 3;
moved expat package from 002-gui to 001-core to
fix network when booting only with 001-core;
removed from 002-gui: fuse; removed from
002-xtra: mp4v2; updated Linux kernel to 6.13.1;
updated NVIDIA driver to 570.86.16; updated
Cinnamon to 6.4.6 (current only); updated GNOME
to 47.3 (current only)...."

BSD Router Project (BSDRP) is an embedded free
and open-source router distribution based on
FreeBSD. The project's latest release is version
1.994 and uses the FreeBSD 15 development
branch. "Starting with this version, BSDRP
requires at least a 4GB disk. If you installed
BSDRP on a 2GB disk, upgrading will not be
possible. However, if it was installed on a 4GB
or larger disk, you can resize the system
partition using the following command: 'system
resize-system-slice 3921924'. New features: This
is an intermediate release preparing the branch
2 that will use the poudriere-image framework in
place of NanoBSD. Based on FreeBSD 15-head
8f6b66a9d3f and ports tree. New packages:
dns/dnsmasq (will replace isc-dhcp44 and
dhcprelya); Python 3.11 (this one added more
than 100M of libs). Removed packages: freevrrpd
(carp is now supporting VRRP mode); ucarp (no
more conflict once carp enabled in VRRP mode);
net/aquantia-atlantic-kmod (does not build on
latest head). Deprecated packages (will be
removed in next release): isc-dhcp44 (use
dnsmasq, kea requires 300MB disk space with its
dependencies); dhcprelya (use dnsmasq)."

Rhino application. Written in Rust and using

Desktop finally has dynamic workspaces, bringing
extra efficiency and flexibility to the already
powerful Unicorn Desktop. Previously, with
static workspaces, you were restricted to a
maximum of four, or had to manually create and
manage the number of spaces yourself. Unicorn
will now automatically create a new workspace
each time the previous ones have an application
open on them, and once there are no applications
open on a workspace, it will be destroyed. The
decision to incorporate this feature draws
inspiration from desktop environments like
GNOME, and the expandable workflow they
provide."

The Linux Mint team have published an update to
the project's 22.x series. The new release,
Linux Mint 22.1, modernizes the APT packaging
tools, introduces new power modes to help uses
find a balance between battery life and
performance, and Cinnamon now provides a Night
Light service which will reduce blue light
exposure. "Choosing a power mode allows you to
balance between power saving and performance
optimization. The following power modes are
available on all computers: Power-saver mode -
limits performance to conserve energy; Balanced
mode - adjusts performance based on your needs.
On supported systems, an additional Performance
mode is available. This mode maximizes
performance at the cost of increased power
consumption. Power-saving modes reduce
performance but can extend battery life, reduce
heat generation, lower CPU frequency, and
decrease fan noise. Note that the system may
override user settings based on the selected
mode to adjust display brightness or make
temporary adjustments to further reduce power
consumption or enhance performance. In Cinnamon,
you can select the power mode by navigating to
Preferences, Power Management."
