NetBSD 10.0 RC2

NetBSD is a highly portable operating system which offers a minimal and clean design. The project has published its second (and probably final) release candidate for NetBSD 10.0. Among the enhancements in this snapshot are cyptographic updates and an experimental implementation of WireGuard. "Compatibility with WireGuard: A new interface, wg(4), provides a VPN tunnel compatible with the WireGuard specification. The driver is experimental and needs more testing. A userspace implementation using a rump kernel server is also included, see wg-userspace(4)/ The NetBSD implementation works with WireGuard implementations used by commercial VPN providers, Android, Linux, and more. Stronger, faster cryptography: Added an implementation of the Adiantum cipher for efficient disk encryption with cgd(4) on systems without AES acceleration. Added support for shared keys to cgdconfig(8), allowing multiple derived subkeys to be used across multiple drives. Switched the default password hashing algorithm to Argon2id, winner of the Password Hashing Competition. The algorithm's hardness automatically scales with system performance. Added support for Argon2id to cgdconfig(8) for use in password-based disk encryption. The kernel now takes advantage of CPU acceleration and vectorization for common cryptographic algorithms on x86 and Arm, including AES and ChaCha. All in-kernel implementations of AES are now constant-time on all architectures. Swap encryption is now automatic using the vm.swap_encrypt=1 sysctl(8) variable."

Emmabuntüs DE5-1.01

Emmabuntüs, a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution originally designed to facilitate the reconditioning of computers donated to humanitarian associations, has been updated to version DE5-1.01. The new release is based on Debian 12.4: "On January 2nd 2024, the Emmabuntüs Collective is happy to announce the release of the new Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 5 1.01 (32-bit and 64-bit variants), based on the Debian 12.4 'Bookworm' distribution and supporting both XFCE and LXQt desktop environments. This new release of our distribution mainly concerns updates to its embedded software, except for the replacement of VeraCrypt by ZuluCrypt, made necessary by the fact that VeraCrypt no longer supports the creation of TrueCrypt volumes, and the update of the English installation tutorial for Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 5. Concerning the activity around our refurbishing USB stick, we have written a small computer reconditioning manual for people who spend a fair amount of time refurbishing computers."

wattOS R13

wattOS is a fast desktop Linux distribution based on Debian. Using the lightweight Openbox window manager as its default user interface, the distribution strives to be as energy-efficient as possible. The project's latest release, version R13, is based on Debian 12. The project's release announcement lists the details: "wattOS R13 has been released with Debian 12 Bookworm as the basis for the OS. Qubes OS 4.2.0

Qubes OS is a security-focused operating system which isolates system components and applications to minimialize the damage which can be done do to a security breech in any one aspect of the platform. The project's latest release, Qubes OS 4.2.0, offers both Debian and Fedora templates and shifts the default desktop from GNOME to Xfce. "Dom0 upgraded to Fedora 37. Xen upgraded to version 4.17. Default Debian template upgraded to Debian 12. Default Fedora and Debian templates use Xfce instead of GNOME. SELinux support in Fedora templates. Several GUI applications rewritten, including: Applications Menu (also available as preview in R4.1); Qubes Global Settings; create New Qube Qubes Update; Unified grub.cfg location for both UEFI and legacy boot; PipeWire support; fwupd integration for firmware updates; optional automatic clipboard clearing; Official packages built using Qubes Builder v2; Split GPG management in Qubes Global Settings; Qrexec services use new qrexec policy format by default (but old format is still supported)."

Manjaro Linux 23.1.0

The Manjaro Linux team has published a new snapshot of the project's rolling-release distribution. The new 23.1.0 release offers up to date desktop environments with the main editions offering GNOME 45, KDE Plasma 5.27, and Xfce 4.18. "One of the most noticeable changes in GNOME 45 is the new activities button. Located in the corner of the top bar, this button was previously labelled “Activities”. In GNOME 45, this static label has been replaced with a dynamic workspace indicator. The new button design is a response to user testing results over recent years, and we are confident that its purpose will be more obvious to new GNOME users. As part of this change, the old app menu (which showed the name of the currently focused app), was also retired. This retirement was another response to user testing results, and was required to make space for the new design. Search performance has been a major area of work for GNOME 45. These performance improvements have been made to a range of apps, including Software, Characters, Clocks, Files, and Calculator. Together, these changes result in faster search and reduced resource usage, which can be seen in both individual apps and in system search."
