Rocky Linux 9.6
Rocky Linux 9.6 has been released. Rocky Linux
is a community-driven enterprise Linux
distribution and a clone of Red Hat Enterprise
Linux. With this release, the project continues
to focus on improving its KIWI image-building
utility: "We are pleased to announce the
general availability of Rocky Linux 9.6. Notable
new features and changes: PHP 8.3 and 8.4, nginx
1.26, MySQL 8.4, Valgrind 3.24.0, SystemTap 5.2,
elfutils 0.192, libabigail 2.6, Performance
Co-pilot 6.3.2, Grafana 10.2.6, LLVM toolset
19.17, Rust toolset 1.84.1, Go toolset 1.23.
With the release of Rocky Linux 9.6, the process
of building and delivering our images continues
to improve. KIWI, a modern image-building tool
that allows for a more consistent and
maintainable workflow, created most of the
images for this release. A new image type is
available in this release, Windows Subsystem for
Linux (or WSL), compatible container archives
can be downloaded and run on a Windows 10 or
Windows 11 system with ease. Utilities for
Oracle Cloud images have been updated to the
most recent versions."

PorteuX 2.1 Gnome
A new stable release of PorteuX, a
Slackware-based Linux distribution that means to
be fast, small, portable, modular and immutable,
is now available. PorteuX 2.1 introduces the
brand-new 6.15 Linux kernel and delivers various
bug fixes: "PorteuX 2.1. Nothing beats a
new release where the system works better and is
even smaller. The default NTFS driver has been
changed from ntfs-3g to ntfs3 (kernel native).
After extensive development, the driver seems
stable now. VirtualBox 7.1.8 (latest stable) is
not compatible with kernel 6.15. So this release
includes a module for VirtualBox 7.2.0 Beta 1.
Wayland sessions in VirtualBox are supported but
it's recommended to enable 3D Accelaration
in Settings, Display. Changelog: fixed a bug
where sometimes a module could be incorrectly
detected as corrupted; fixed the Linux installer
to be language-agnostic...."

/etc/kernel-hooks.d/secureboot.conf, no action
is needed. gummiboot-efistub has been moved to
testing and is no longer maintained."

NixOS 25.05
NixOS is an independently-developed GNU/Linux
distribution that aims to improve the state of
the art in system configuration management. The
distribution's latest release is version
25.05 "Warbler" which will be
supported until the end of 2025. The
project's release announcement mentions
some key highlights, including the availability
of GNOME 48 and COSMIC desktop packages.
"The packaging of Mesa graphics drivers has
been significantly reworked, in particular:
Applications linked against different Mesa
versions than installed on the system should now
work correctly going forward (however,
applications against older Mesa, e.g. from
Nixpkgs releases before 25.05, remain broken).
The global Mesa version can now be managed
without a mass rebuild by setting
hardware.graphics.package. Packages that used to
depend on Mesa for libgbm or libdri should use
libgbm or dri-pkgconfig-stub as inputs,
respectively. OpenSSH has been updated from
9.9p2 to 10.0p2, dropping support for DSA keys
and adding a new ssh-auth binary to handle user
authentication in a different address space from
unauthenticated sessions."

The AlmaLinux project has released an update to
the distribution's 9.x series. AlmaLinux OS
9.6 focuses on performance and security, as the
release announcement highlights: "AlmaLinux
9.6 Stable continues to enhance performance,
development tools, and security. Updated module
streams improve support for web applications,
while new compiler versions bring optimizations
for better performance. The release also
delivers updates to elfutils, Valgrind,
SystemTap, and PCP improving system debugging
and performance monitoring. Networking
improvements come with new versions of
NetworkManager and iproute. Security updates
include new SELinux-policy and SSSD versions.
Containerization and virtualization are improved
with updated podman, buildah, libvirt, and
QEMU-KVM. Additionally, the new snpguest and
snphost packages enhance virtualization
capabilities. AlmaLinux OS 9.6 also includes a
tech-preview of KVM virtualization support for
the IBM Power architecture. It has been
unavailable upstream since version 9.0, but is
fundamental for a number of AlmaLinux
users."

it's used to boot in both UEFI and MBR

openSUSE 16.0 Beta
The openSUSE project has announced the
availability of openSUSE 16.0 beta, a
development snapshot previewing features coming
in the next version of the project's stable
Leap branch. Many of the key changes focus on
removing legacy packages. "Leap 16.0 with
its fresh fork brings a renewed foundation and
cleaner system. Expected to be Wayland-only
(some X.Org remnants remain for now). SysV init
support has been dropped. The new Agama
installer is now the default. The traditional
YaST stack is retired in favor of: Cockpit for
system management; Myrlyn as a drop-in
replacement for the YaST Software GUI. (Note:
YaST is still available in Tumbleweed but will
no longer be developed; YaST has been removed
from Leap 16 and Myrlyn takes on this role of
software installation like YaST. If someone is
interested in the maintenance of YaST for
further development and bug fixes, the source
are available on GitHub. Leap 16.0 will no
longer run on machines that do not support
x86_64-v2."

first update in over two years. The update to

kernel, userland and package manager.

df-latetest.conf config file, which rendered
pkg(8) unusable. Updated the shipped ca_root_nss
package so that the newer Let's Encrypt
certificates are trusted and thus pkg(8) works
with the Avalon HTTPS repo. Fixed a memory leak
in the legacy IDE/NATA driver that could easily
lead to kernel panics. Expose SMBIOS entry point
via kenv so dmidecode(8) works on UEFI-only
systems."
