SparkyLinux 2024.05
SparkyLinux is a lightweight, Debian-based
distribution. The project has published an
update to its semi-rolling branch. This update
includes new versions of Firefox, LibreOffice,
Thunderbird, and the kernel. It also rolls back
a recent change, swapping out the newer Nala
package manager in favour of APT. "The latest
version of Sparky CLI Installer provides a few
changes, such as autopartitioning option and so,
autosetting the target system a little faster.
The Nala [package manager] doesn't upgrade
packages properly as APT, so I recommend to
uninstall Nala on Sparky Testing. There is also
issue of libgnutls-dane0 package (massive
package update in testing) which has to be
uninstalled before upgrading other packages.
There are three new package repo and ISO mirror
servers available for downloading ISO images and
installing packages, located: US2 in NY, USA,
SI1 and SI2 in Singapore, Asia. All three
servers are provided thanks to Astian, Inc." |

Garuda Linux is a rolling, desktop distribution
based on the Arch Linux operating system. The
project's latest release, Garuda Linux 240428,
ships with a number of upgrades, the most
immediately apparent being the new Plasma 6
desktop: "The main focus of this release is
certainly the already mentioned Plasma 6 upgrade
which already arrived in the Dr460nized edition.
Meanwhile, Sway and Hyprland received some major
improvements to their respective editions as
well. Also, FireDragon was rebased to Floorp,
meaning we now profit from its interesting
feature set. Lastly, our build system for the
garuda repository received major updates, and
the pilot phase for Chaotic-AUR infra 4.0 is
supposed to start soon. As KDE 6 was released in

to KDE 6, which also caused some of them to be
replaced with updated forks (eg. the original

The portable NetBSD operating system has reached
a new milestone with the release of NetBSD 10.0.
The new version introduces a number of
performance and security improvements:
"Benchmarks of NetBSD 10 show huge performance
and scalability gains over NetBSD 9.x,
especially on multiprocessor and multicore
systems, for compute and filesystem-bound
applications. Areas of improvement included:
switched the kernel's file path lookup cache to
use faster per-directory red-black trees;
improved scheduler performance, including the
ability to more appropriately spread load on a
mixture of slow and fast cores (e.g. big.LITTLE
Arm CPUs); various optimizations for the
machine-independent virtual memory system;
improved tracking of clean/dirty pages, speeding
up fsync(2) on large files by orders of
magnitude; improved parallelization - rewritten
page allocator with awareness of CPU topology,
replaced global counters with per-CPU counters,
and reduced lock contention; improved the
performance of the select(2) and poll(2) system
calls; improved the performance of tmpfs;
implemented lazy update of atime/mtime; various
optimizations of architecture-dependent x86 and
AArch64 code, vastly improved network and I/O
